Barents Forest Sector Task Force
- a subgroup of the Working Group on Economic Co-operation in the Barents Region
The Barents Forest Sector Task Force was established in May 2000. Since the beginning of 2004 the BFSTF is co-chaired between Norway and Sweden. The main objectives of the BFSTF are to create necessary conditions for the development of forestry, environmental care, and wood-based industries through co-operation, mutual concrete actions, projects and programmes within the forest sector of the Barents Region.
Efforts to develop model forests and the model forest concept in the Barents Region have been undertaken by the BFSTF. The model forest concept is a method for a holistic approach towards forestry, including economic, environmental, and social dimensions on further exploitation of the forest resources. A Barents Model Forest Network will be established and linked to the International Model Forest Network.
A Northern Dimension Forest Sector Programme was finalised in March 2001. The NDFSP is a proposed agenda for combined efforts on forestry and forestry related issues of a range of institutions in countries of northern Europe. Its objective is to identify and achieve common targets for sustainable forestry and livelihoods through collaboration amongst Northern Dimension countries.
Three networks have been established under the BFSTF:
1. Network for assessing logistic chain and trade of timber and other wood products (lead-country is Norway). 2. Network concerning utilisation of forest resources and wood based energy (lead-countries are Russia and Finland).
3. Network for co-operation and collaboration between forest authorities (lead-country is Sweden)
Furthermore, the BFSTF participates in the work of the Task Force on Bioenergy, initiated by the BEAC Working Group on Energy.
